Actinic Keratosis Treatment – Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is one of the best surgical treatments for actinic keratosis. This surgical methods involve the use of freezing Nitrogen to destroy and remove keratosis growth on the skin. It is applied under extremely low temperature and it is quite fast , which means an individual do not have to wait endlessly for several sessions to get the keratosis growth removed, several applications may be needed if the growth are spread on different parts of the skin.

Keratosis lesions are first of all rendered frozen through cryotherapy, these skin lesions become dry and fall off from the skin, Cryosurgery is applicable on superficial or flat lesions on the skin because they cannot remove thicker lesions. Cryotherapy works by constricting the blood vessels at the sight of the skin to be treated, and this constriction in blood vessels will result in the diminution of the blood flow and since blood flow in this region has been lessen, then nutrients as well as oxygen will not be supplied effectively to the region to be treated . At the end of this procedure, the cells will fade out through a process known as Necrosis.

CO2 as well as Nitrogen are the commonest agents used in cryotherapy procedures. The technique involved in the cryotherapy procedure is that heat is transferred from the keratosis growth into the liquid freezing Nitrogen and as such the growth begins to dry up and falls of easily. Intra-cellular contents of the frozen skin growth often leak out after the liquid Nitrogen has dried out and during the leaching out of cellular contents of the keratosis growth, an individual will feel inflammation and redness of the skin , pain and warmth will also be felt especially as the growth cells finally dies out.

One of the disadvantages of using liquid Nitrogen for actinic keratosis treatment is that , liquid Nitrogen is quite dangerous and must not come in contact for a long time with the skin otherwise skin tissues can be destroyed permanently. Extreme care must be taken when transferring Nitrogen before treatment so that it does not spill out and cause respiratory problems for both the medical personnel and the individual being treated. Aside the fact that Liquid Nitrogen is harmful to health and the likelihood of an individual suffering from some redness, Cryotherapy remains one of the safest and fastest treatments for actinic Keratosis.
