Actinic Keratosis Treatment

Too much exposure to the sun can cause actinic keratosis which leads to skin cancer. This is a fact that should not be ignored although a good number of people have taken this for granted because they think that it has not harmed them at all. Skin diseases do not appear right away after you have exposed yourself outside without proper skin protection for a day. They slowly appear on the skin, unnoticeable. The symptoms for the first stages of actinic keratosis often start from itchiness. They are ignored not only because the symptoms are like that of a mosquito bite but they are really unnoticeable when one looks at them in the mirror. This is because some of them have the same color of the skin that only by touching them one will think that there is something different with their skin.

Actinic keratosis is one of the skin diseases that are often ignored by people. They are a result from too much exposure to the sun which means that majority of the people who spend lots of time or work outdoors are the ones experiencing this. They appear slowly on the skin as rough patches and usually do not have any early symptoms or signs. Majority of the doctors consider this disease as a factor for early stage of skin cancer because more often than not it leads to it.

Actinic keratoses are commonly found on the face since it is the part that is exposed to the sun all day. Men tend to develop more AKs on the ears than women because with women their ears are protected by their long hair. Generally it develops around the cheeks, at the back, scalp, and other areas that are exposed to the sun too much. People who are fair skinned are commonly the ones who are vulnerable to this skin disease as their contains less natural protection or melanin.

Some of the people who have this skin disease often say that they never go out and expose themselves to the sun. There is one explanation about AK and that it does not appear suddenly after exposing oneself to the sun for a whole day. It takes years to form and depending on the kind of lifestyle, it will either grow bigger or disappear of its own accord.

So what about Actinic Keratosis treatment?

Most doctors recommend ointments or actinic keratosis removal cream as opposed to surgical removal when they see that it has not gone worse yet or it depends upon their diagnosis. They have surgery as well but only in the worst cases as most people prefer to have ointments over it because either it is expensive and doesn’t leave a scar like surgery.
